Workshops

The Museum is committed to offering fun, educational, hands-on activities for children and families throughout the year. These workshops offer families a chance to bond while experiencing the decorative arts in a hands-on, creative way, and the opportunity to take unique works home to treasure! Family activities are appropriate for most ages with parental help (see activity information for more details).

When attending Family Workshops, please remember to wear "play" clothes as the workshop activities often involve the use of paint, glue, and other materials that may stain clothing.

Workshops are open to the public with no charge for parents or chaperones.

Please contact Lauren Hunter-Smith at education@headley-whitney.org for more information.

Field Trips

Bring your class to the Gem of the Bluegrass! We tailor our tours to the grade of each specific visiting group. In addition to learning about museums and their function in society, students will also learn the meaning of "decorative art" and see many examples first hand, then try their hand at creating some art of their own!

Our past Field Trip offings have included:

  • Super Shells: Learn about sea shells and the animals that live in them! Learn about George Headley's "Shell Grotto" then get up-close and in-person with shells with our shell-touch tank to examine, explore, and learn about shells! We will then look at artistic uses for shells from throughout history, then create "Sailor's Valentines" of our own to take home! ($3 per student; minimum of 15 students).
  • Eco-Jewelry: Learn a brief lesson about the history of jewelry and personal adornments, and about our founder, George W. Headley's history as an artist and jewelry designer. We will visit the Jewel Room to see George W. Headley's designs and the final pieces, then students will then create "eco jewelry" using recycled materials to wear and take home! ($3 per student; minimum of 15 students).
  • Printmaking: Learn about this ancient artform by trying your hand at printmaking! Students will learn a brief lesson about what makes printmaking a unique artform, then create a relief print of their own using styrofoam blocks and make an impression! We will provide styrofoam blocks, pencils, paper, block ink, and a printing press. ($3 per student; minimum of 15 students).

  • The Museum also offers ample space for picnicing on our grounds and in our gardens.
Please contact Lauren Hunter-Smith at education@headley-whitney.org for more information.

Outreach

Unable to make it out to the Museum bust still interested in bringing the Museum experience to your classroom? Let the Museum staff bring our field trip offerings to you! We offer variations on our field trip offerings that can be enjoyed from the classroom. We will provide a short lesson about the decorative arts to your class, then let your class's creativity shine with a craft supplied by the Museum.

Outreach opportunities include:

  • Super Shells: Learn about sea shells and the animals that live in them! We will bring our shell touch-tank to your classroom for your students to examine, explore, and learn about up-close and in-person! We will then look at artistic uses for shells from throughout history, then create shell art of our own to take home! ($3 per student; minimum of 15 students).
  • Eco-Jewelry: Learn a brief lesson about the history of jewelry and personal adornments, and about our founder, George W. Headley's history as an artist and jewelry designer. Students will then create "eco jewelry" using recycled materials to wear and take home! ($3 per student; minimum of 15 students).

These are only a few of the offerings we are able to provide to your class. We are happy to work with you to create an experience tailored to your curriculum. Please contact Lauren Hunter-Smith at education@headley-whitney.org for more information.
